i noticed going back a few days atleast that every time there is a flare up from the sun that the intervals go from 12 mins to a hour or so.its like there taking the best and most important frames out. gonna try to post the data from the past 5 days so you can see.havent done this before so if you could please be patient.or if someone can do it quicker be my guest.with all the activity with the sun lately you would hope they would atleast let you watch out for your self.

This is normal.
Soho is not in contact with the earth 24 hours a day.
Every day there is a gap in the realtime images from the lasco feed.
From around 4pm to midnight or longer. Or at other times.
After 24 hours they update the gap after processing the data.

lasco-www.nrl.navy.mil...

If it just happens at the 'good moments' that's just luck.

There is reception of data, and transmission of data, they try to do those things in optimal opportunities. Job one is the operation of that, job two is giving it to you.

In response to an e-mail I sent to head SOHO asking why things were strange lately.

Dear Mark,

There is no "deliberate" cut of the data streams the way you are
implying.

Yes, there are often gaps in the data because of scheduled, spacecraft
maneuvers for orbit correction (instruments on board do not observe
during those). We also perform "keyhole maneuvers"
(sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov...) which has to do
with antenna range. There are also instrument-specific outages with
specific instruments performing maintenance, for example EIT often
performs a CCD Bakeout
(umbra.nascom.nasa.gov...). It can vary....

We process data and we make them available as soon as they come from
the spacecraft. There are cases that we have delays imposed by networks,
computers and the automated processing that makes the files from FITS
(as they come from the spacecraft) to web-accessible JPEGs to post on
the site but we always make the data available. Look at:
sohodata.nascom.nasa.gov...

We are a 15-year-old mission and we barely ever had resources (people,
time) to run the spacecraft, let alone monitor and edit the huge amount
of data that is being collected. Do you *really* believe we would be
posting timely stories (soho.nascom.nasa.gov...) on
our website or, attract and welcome world-wide media attention
(soho.nascom.nasa.gov...) if we were trying to
hide something? Really?...

SOHO is a science mission and all the data is available to anyone.
There is no intention to hide anything, we are scientists, we are trying to
explore and discover, not to hide.

Hope this helps,
George

If you go to the "search and download data" page you ask for the latest, lets say, 300 images.
You put the display tab on list and you can easily check if any data is missing.

Always 12min apart (in my search)

ok so i went back today and its still missing.on 11-03-2011 it jumps from 2200 hrs to 2312.on 11-04-2011 it jumps from 0036 to 0248.everything else is 12 mins apart.and the pieces that are missing are the main part of the flares coming off the sun.tried for a couple hours to get the data on the thread but cant find it after i downloaded it.if a mod could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Why would they let Russia or China know when a big solar flare is coming so they can turn their satellites off....so they don't get fried?

They started editing what you can see because of this. They might as well just shut down the SOHO website.

It's a waste of tax payer money posting really nothing. The website serves no "PUBLIC" purpose anymore. Kinda like NASA 'eh?

To get the images posted to this thread, try uploading it by clicking "Tools+" at the top, then click on "ATS uploads", then just browse to the location of the image you want to upload and copy and paste the link it gives you, to post it here.

I'm impressed that you took the time to ask, and I'm even more impressed that they took the time to write you such a long and detailed reply. It doesn't even look like a "cookie-cutter" response though I can't be sure.

Now if someone else doesn't want to believe the response, enjoy your fantasy. It sounds like a reasonable explanation to me.
