(PhysOrg.com) -- History is filled with examples of ethnic violence, the type that erupts when people with differing cultures attempt to live side by side. The Middle East comes to mind, as does Northern Ireland or Yugoslavia. What’s not so common are studies done that show what sorts of things actually work to prevent problems when people of dissimilar backgrounds live next door to one another. Thus, a new study done by Yaneer Bar-Yam and his team at the New England Complex Systems Institute, appears to be particularly relevant. He and his colleagues, describe in their paper on the preprint server arXiv, how a study they’ve done of the ethnically diverse country of Switzerland, shows that political and geographical boundaries have served to keep the peace between the different groups.

This is an interesting research, with conclusion running contrary to current paradigm of multiculturalism at all costs. When the mixing of cultures threatens to result in problems and conflicts (such as western civilisation vs. islamic society), its better for all to keep the borders and separation than trying to prematurely unite different and often opposed cultures.

Here in America we refer to this idea as segregation. It tends to have a bad effect on the general mindset of our nation. We prefer the violence to the geographic reinforcement of racist ideas.

Implying violence does not reinforce racist ideas far more than geographic separation. I would certainly hate someone violent and living nearby far more than someone who lives far away and I dont even know him in person.

The forced segregation in the U.S. between blacks and whites (which was based on skin color) is not what is being talked about here.

I always said the end result of "multiculturalism" is genocide.

You cant mandate boundaries any more than you can mandate multiculturalism.

The big failure is that governments attempt to social engineer societies setting up incentives for migration so rather than natural movement and change we get this artificial change that just breeds hostility, bigotry and xenophobia.

None of this would ever be an issue if governments didnt assume the role of social engineers.

When people are ready to mingle they'll mingle. Dont tell Joe that Fariq is moving in next door whether he likes it or not and dont sell Fariq a load of BS about opportunities that arent there and you wont get the sort of problems we get all over the world now.
