Well: The two party system is less a habit, but more a function of the "winner takes all"-mechanic.
A 3rd-party candidate could make 49% in all states. He still wouldn't get a single electoral college vote.
It's not cynical to say a 3rd party vote is wasted under this system, it's the truth.
