I received an email from a source claiming to be from the IRS.

Firstly let me make it clear
1. I am not a US citizen
2. I have never been to the US or any of it's territories
3. I have never worked in the US or any of it's territories
4. I have never lodged a tax return with the IRS.
5. I do not have a US social security number.
6. I have never disclosed my email to the IRS

I have not downloaded the attachment to the email out of fear of a virus.

The written part of the email goes as follows.

Department of Treasury Internal Revenue Source

Important information about your tax return

We are unable to process your tax return

We recived your tax return. However, we are unable to process the return as field.

Our records indicate that the person identifiedas the primary taxpayer or spouse on the tax return did not provided all the required documents shown on the tax form. Our records are based on information received from the Social Security Administration.

Based on this information, the tax account for the individual has been locked.

What you need to do

Print out the attached notification and list of missing documents, fill it in, add the documents and send the following information to the adress shown in the attached notification.

List of required documents:

1. A copy of this letter

2. Notification letter

3. A photocopy of valid U.S. Federal or State Government issued identification.

Is this just a scam email?

Is it it possible that someone in the US stole my ID?

I haven't had any money stolen from my bank accounts.

UPDATE

I just realised it is from Internal Revenue Source, not Internal Revenue Service so it must be a scam.

DON'T DO IT!!! IT'S A TRICK!!! (sorry, Mods)

Really, don't do it. Go to the IRS website - www.irs.gov/ and they have a Phishing and bogus e-mail section that will instruct you on how to send the errant note to them. I do it all the time. Eventually, the emails stop due to the diligence of the IRS
or maybe they (the e-mailers) give up. Either way do this and you're covered.

Based on the grammar, I am going to say hoax.

Even the IRS can form proper sentences.

Should be:

Yep, it's a scam. I just checked my spam folder and found 6 of those emails just for today. They seem to have become pretty popular within the past month or so.

If you look at the attachments you will find a randomly named jpeg file and a doc.zip file. If you extract the zip file you end up with an executable that will install malware on your system and can contact a remote server and download further malware components.

This bogus email appears to be gaining in popularity over the UPS/DHL/Fedex Ship Notification email which acts similarly.

Mark as spam and delete.

They usually come from South Africa, its an old scam, had one the other day from supposed D.H.L. regarding a parcel that hasn't been claimed, so i forwarded the email to a buddy who works in dhl and rang him up and appropriate steps were taken.
