Exxon Water Grab

(ExxonMobile) wants to take 0.25 million gallons of water per day from Oquaga Creek, a trout stream that flows to the West Branch of the Delaware River in Broome and Delaware Counties to develop natural gas wells they plan to drill there.

there is a moratorium on toxic gas drilling in the Delaware River Watershed and on horizontal drilling/hydrofracking in New York

From what I understand, Fracking involves pumping clean water into natural gas wells to force the gas to the surface. There are apparently some really nasty environmental consequences that I'm not sure I fully understand.

Many locals landowners in areas where fracking is to occur are essentially "paid off" with natural gas lease contracts to allow (and garner political support for) this process to occur horizontally beneath the ground. These contracts I assume to be peanuts to the industry, however are "riches" to rural landowners and a potential spur to the micro-economy in the region. There are reports and rumors of toxic domestic well water actually catching fire off the tap in Pennsylvania where fracking is not under state moritorium. There was also a recent article in Time Magazine on the subject which depicted a spill of drilling mud in Stroudsburg, PA which killed cattle and poisoned a pond and domestic water wells.

Time: Shale Gas

Your thoughts?

We want to get off of oil so we have to start somewhere or in other words we cannot have it both ways...we could do very well with additional gas reserves...I think it's a good thing and naturally because it's in out backyard

It is not clean water they pump in -- they might use a little water, for sweetener but mostly this stuff.. You know how you wouldn't dump used motor oil in your back yard .............

So who cares if they pump that stuff 1000's of feet underground... who does it hurt?

Not sure if serious But what the heck - they aren't doing it in my neighborhood (we have money)

From the Wiki -

Environmental and human health concerns associated with hydraulic fracturing include the contamination of ground water, risks to air quality, the migration of gases and hydraulic fracturing chemicals to the surface, and the potential mishandling of waste.[26] The potential costs associated with possible environmental clean-up processes, loss of land value and human and animal health concerns are undetermined. A 2010 EPA study discovered contaminants in drinking water including: arsenic, copper, vanadium, and adamantanes adjacent to drilling operations; however, the EPA stated a broad range of sources including drilling or agricultural activity too could be responsible.[27] New technological advances and appropriate state regulations are working to study and safely implement the process.[28]

A caveat to begin with...I make my living in the energy industry, Oil and Gas exploration to be more precise.

I am a drill here, drill now, American Energy Independence advocate, while also looking toward a view of developing alternative energy technologies. Understanding the concern over the possible ramifications of Hydraulic Fracturing, we should not condemn to the practice out of hand, nor should we proceed with complete abandon. A recent study published in the National Academy of Sciences, U.S.A. found that there were elevated levels of methane in water wells located near gas wells in which fracking had been used. Interestingly enough, they didn't have baseline for their study. None of the subject water wells were tested prior to the fracking process. Link.

What they did not find, I think to the surprise of many, were any of the chemicals used in the process.

There is this promising technology to help deal with fracking fluids. Link.

to understand the implications fully and to continue to develop processes that are safe, more studies need to be done.

I would like to see this country become Energy Independent. That will require more development of our own Oil and Natural Gas resources as well as development of alternative energy resources. But, even some of those developing alternatives have ecological impacts. For instance, a recent article discusses how Wind power turbines threaten protected birds in California. Link. There are other examples to include solar power, wave farms, etc which can be found by searching the internet.

No matter how we proceed, how much study we do there will always be unforeseen implications that will require us to adapt and change.
