Lawmakers urge President Obama to fill IG vacancies
IG posts are vacant at the State, Justice, Homeland Security, Labor and Housing and Urban Development departments, the lawmakers said in a letter. State's IG post has been vacant for three-and-a-half years, the letter said. Positions for the special IG for Afghanistan reconstruction, special IG for the Troubled Asset Relief Program and the intelligence community's IG are also vacant.
IGs serve as a bulwark against waste, mismanagement and misconduct, and if an agency's IG is missing, those kinds of abuses could proceed unchecked, the lawmakers said.
"We have serious concerns that the lack of permanent inspectors general at so many federal agencies is impeding the federal government's efforts to increase efficiencies and detect and prevent waste, fraud and abuse," the letter said. "We respectfully request that you move without delay to appoint qualified, experienced individuals to serve as inspectors general."
