content.usatoday.c om

A Michigan man who blames the FBI for the murder of his father and thousands of others was arrested today and accused of leaving a bomb in a tool bag at the Detroit federal building last month.

Federal building security officers kept the black satchel for three weeks before discovering the explosive device inside.

Gary Mikulich, 42, of Kingsford, in the Upper Peninsula, is to appear Friday morning in federal court in Marquette, Mich., The Detroit News says. If convicted, he could face 5 to 10 years in prison.

I want to point out something, this bomb was in the building for THREE WEEKS before being discovered.

Another thing to point out is that neither the article, nor the FBI Press Release indicate the man's religious or political affiliation, which I find odd. If it were a middle eastern man, his religion would obviously be front and center.

The family of Gary Mikulich released the following statement: Gary John Mikulich was arrested, without incident, at the family home today in Kingsford. About 18 years ago, Gary was diagnosed with the mental illness of paranoid schizophrenia. Gary refused to take the recommended medications when mental health officials advised Gary that the required medications had a long list of side effects. Gary was further advised by mental health officials that he was an adult and had rights and could not be forced to take the medications. Pat Mikulich, Gary's mother being concerned about Gary's mental health, consulted with the mental health department in Kingsford and was told Gary could not be forced to take the medication except by a judge's order. After a family arranged court hearing, Gary was confined to an Upper Peninsula mental hospital. While hospitalized Gary on a daily basis would refuse to take the recommended medications. Gary was transferred to another hospital and was finally convinced to take the med's with the promise he would be released and monitored by the mental health clinic in Kingsford. Shortly after being released Gary again refused proper treatment. At that point Gary's family, frustrated, took action by going to court and getting a court order to get Gary the proper treatment. The Mikulich family tried many times to make Gary realize that he needed to be on his medication to no avail and feels the system has failed him and failed the family. As a young man, Gary was very well liked and had lot of friends. For the past several years Gary has held a full time job, and when occupied Gary seemed content with life. Gary has been unemployed the last 6 months and at no time ever gave the family any indication that he was a threat to himself or to anyone else in the community. The Mikulich family is truly thankful that no one was injured and is hopeful that Gary may now be forced to get the treatment that the family attempted to get him. The family would like to extend their thanks for the professionalism of the FBI, Michigan State Police, Kingsford Public Safety and the Iron Mountain Police Department involved with the investigation and apprehension of Gary Mikulich.

Another break with reality. Not just Mr. Mikulich but another case of society's break with the reality of the mentally ill. Well, as his family said, maybe now he can get the treatment he needs.

Loss of a job is right up there with divorce and death for mental stress.

His mental health issue is interesting, but what is more interesting is why this bomb was kept in a closet for THREE WEEKS before the bomb squad was called.

What would have happened if this had gone off and hurt someone?
