Can you include any references? The highest magnitude I have come across as of 3-19-2011 is 5.6 off the coast of Japan from following site:

This is an after-shock - these happen for a long time.

Up to 3 or 4 months.

Duh it wasn't an earthquake it was an aftershock - stop sensationalising.

Magnitude 5.0 or greater

take a look at this. in the past week alone japan has been hit with countless earthquakes and the shock waves just keep coming back harder.

BBC News just confirmed it as a 6.1

I know it's only an aftershock but still scary for the people over there after all they have been through recently.

WHY IS THIS EVEN GETTING COVERAGE?

Yes, after-shocks are still earthquakes, and horrible for everyone.

I was not trying to put you down, OP.

Recent earthquakes near Japan
Time Magnitude Location
2011 March 19 09:56:51 UTC 5.9 Near the east coast of Honshu, Japan

2011 March 19 01:22:43 UTC 5.9 Off the east coast of Honshu, Japan

2011 March 18 23:33:00 UTC 5.6 Near the east coast of Honshu, Japan

www.google.com...

The magnitude 7.2 quake on March 9 was by itself larger than the Northridge earthquake of 1994, and at the time one of only nine events in the Japan trench subduction zone with a magnitude of 7 or higher since 1973.

Since the March 11 quake, the fourth largest in recorded history, aftershocks have continued to rattle Japan.

Even though these are all considered after shocks, I think they really need a break.
Japan is in my prayers.

It may be a aftershock, or NOT! I am only saying what the reporter says who is out there at this moment. they say it's not an aftershock. Not me...

Anyway, a 6 ish quake is no baby, I have been in a 5.4 quake before now, and that was no joke, It picked my entire house off the ground and dropped it like a stone. So a 6 or there abouts is far stronger, so I would not like to be in a quake of that size thanks!

yes aftershocks are earthquakes!!

eta: also that area is highly unstable and they are still expecting the "big one" just south of where the 9.0 quake struck where the three plates meet.
so in reality he is not sensationalising anything he is keeping us updated on the current situation there.

thanks op.

eta again sorry, the earthquakes seem to be moving south aswell getting nearer to the triple plate junction which is a growing concern, there is a thread dedicated to this scanario that trueamerican has made here
