YouTube Aims to Eliminate Shaky Cellphone Video

Youtube is planning to use technology from a company it acquired to introduce a stabalizer for use on shaky cellphone video and another technology intended to make good slow motion possible using footage filmed at a normal framerate.

“Take, for example, videos of recent protests in Libya,” said Jeremy Doig, Director of Google Video Technology. “Although emotionally captivating, they can be jerky, blurry or unsteady. What if there was a technology that could improve the quality of such videos -- sharpening the image, reducing visual noise and rendering a higher-quality, steadier video -- all while your video is simply being uploaded to the site?”

They could prove useful with all those shaky UFO videos

Now if they could create a way to focus all those blurry UFO videos, then they would be on to something.

Good description of a typical UFO video.

This technology should improve the watchability of cell phone videos, but it may actually do more harm than good to UFO videos, if the goal is to identify the object rather than improve watchability.

As the ATS owners have said you can't really do good UFO analysis from a youtube video because it's compressed and distorted during the upload process, this will only increase the amount of monkeying around of the video making that even more true. But for things other than UFOs, we don't really care about trying to identify an object so this technology should help overall.

You guys might find this interesting then, even though it's not that new. But then again I'm sure some other fans of free software have known of this.





I guess the point is that it'll be nice though to have something like that built right into YouTube with less fudge-factor and setup work involved. Just another part of the processing that occurs after a video gets uploaded.
