Latest Thursday night dispatch from embattled ar-Ramadi: 20 Americans killed, four Humvees destroyed.
In a late dispatch on Thursday, posed at 11:50pm Mecca time, the local correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam updated his earlier reports on the day’s
fighting in ar-Ramadi. The correspondent wrote that the battles that broke out at about 9:45pm Mecca time were still going on. Iraqi Resistance
forces, he wrote, succeeded in destroying four American Humvees and killing 20 US invader troops in the most recent fighting in the city.
After the battles that erupted during the late afternoon, which, in turn followed a wave of three car bombings mounted by the Resistance, the US sent
a military patrol consisting of four Humvees to al-Mu‘arid Street [“Street of Expositions”] and it stopped at the ar-Ramadi General Garage. There it
came under a blistering Iraqi Resistance attack that destroyed all four Humvees. After that engagement, intense fighting broke out between the US
aggressors at 10:15 and was still going on as the correspondent filed his report. The field of battle extended, he wrote, from the festival squares in
the city all the way to al-Ma‘rid Street.
Eyewitnesses told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that the Humvees were destroyed by a series of bombs or rocket-propelled grenades. At the moment
that the vehicles were blowing up, Resistance snipers picked off the American troops fleeing the exploding Humvees, killing at least 20 of them,
according to a preliminary count done under battle conditions.
