SECRETARY-GENERAL Kofi Annan has selected Pakistan's ambassador to Washington for the job of UN envoy to Iraq, a well-informed UN official said today.

The appointment of Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, a respected veteran diplomat who has served in key posts around the world, was expected to be announced later today or tomorrow, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
