The US military is responsible for the most egregious and widespread pollution of the planet, yet this information and accompanying documentation goes almost entirely unreported.

In spite of the evidence, the environmental impact of the US military goes largely unaddressed by environmental organizations and was not the focus of any discussions or proposed restrictions at the recent UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

This impact includes uninhibited use of fossil fuels, massive creation of greenhouse gases, and extensive release of radioactive and chemical contaminants into the air, water, and soil.

The extensive global operations of the US military (wars, interventions, and secret operations on over one thousand bases around the world and six thousand facilities in the United States) are not counted against US greenhouse gas limits.

The worst is probably the DU... and chemical weapons being dumped across the globe.

But DU is worse because it lasts millions of years and kills all life... increases cancer by thousands of folds...

Sometimes, I think it would have been better for Iraq if the US just nuked Baghdad and be done with it... there would be less radioactive material in Iraq right now than 8 years of DU use which represents thousands of tons of radioactive material....for the next few million years...

DU, like AIDS, the gift that keep on giving.

But this really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, after all, it has been admitted by one of those responsible, none other than Lawrence Summers, who was Chief Economist of the World Bank at the time. In a leaked 1991 memo Summers states:

"The measurements of the costs of health impairing pollution depends on the foregone earnings from increased morbidity and mortality. From this point of view a given amount of health impairing pollution should be done in the country with the lowest cost, which will be the country with the lowest wages. I think the economic logic behind dumping a load of toxic waste in the lowest wage country is impeccable and we should face up to that."

He later stated he was merely being 'sarcastic', either way the mans a nasty piece of work.
