A woman has blown herself up killing 5 people and injuring 11 in a police station as she was being frisked on her way into the station.

Police said the woman was being frisked on her way into the station when the blast occurred.

The island is struggling to end a decades-long civil war with Tamil Tiger rebels but the government and rebels have been observing a truce since February 2002.

The bombing comes two days after "Black Tiger Day," which marks the anniversary of the first suicide bombing by a rebel soldier on July 5, 1987.
