AS many as 200 people may have been buried in a landslide yesterday that swept over 10 houses in Medellin, Colombia's second largest city, Red Cross relief workers said.

"The initial count is that there may be 150-200 people considered missing. So far we have rescued three alive," said Cesar Uruena, a Red Cross operations deputy director.

"We are focused on moving rubble to see if we find survivors," he added.

Medellin is 250 miles (400 km) northwest of Bogota.

These seem to be occurring quite often these days, im not sure why or how they occur. They also always seem to take a high amount of lives with them also. There is no question they are natural disasters, unless some one has heard the contrary? Mining perhaps? Soil erosion?
Any ideas? Opinions?
