Through the various eruptions, there are now at least 450 casualties.
The eruption is broad in the news but one aspect of it seems little wonder to be addressed:
the ash cloud from Mount Merapi.
And while we still vaguely remember that virtually all of Europe flight where canceled when the Icelandic
vulcano Eyjafjalljökull erupted. Airlines canceled all flights , even
if they did not come near the ash cloud. Anyway, all air traffic was canceled.
Why is there no problem with the Merapi and its ash cloud seems not affect air traffic at all?

In April 2010 all air traffic came to a stop all around Europe. The rumors are that it was a massive military exercise,
and that the ash cloud was actually the perfect distraction.
It was such a new and unknown threats that flights which do not came even near
the ash clouds were grounded.
With Merapi it is different. The airport of Yogyakarta, 25 kilometers away,
the runway was only one hour closed before it was cleared, according to the little information that was shared by the media.

Of course, in Central Java, there are not many airports. Aircraft can avoid ash clouds as easily and divert them to
other airports. In the case of the Eyjafjalljökull attracted the ash clouds over the densely populated Europe.
Yet there was much more grounded airplane's than necessary.
If there was a purpose to do that, which purpose it would be?

Not all aircraft suffered from the Icelandic ash cloud. Intentionally or not,
exactly in that period there was a very large scale NATO air force exercise that went
on as normal without the jets suffered from an ash cloud. It was the largest military exercise of the year.
Which is particularly useful when they did not suffer from civil aircraft. Just that it is no coincidence,
only a residual demand for the Merapi mystery to solve:

What kind of military exercise took place?

Sorry if my english is not very clear.

You kind of answered your own question in there - Merapi cloud is easily avoided by air traffic, while the Icelandic eruption sent ash over the densely populated UK. Ash isn't just smoke, its very corrosive and if sucked into a modern jet turbine could cause catastrophic damage within a short period of time. It could literally cause planes to fall out of the sky.

Cancelling flights was a pretty sensible move - better safe than sorry.
