I think you are reading into the term too much. By "unidentified artifact" they (probably) simply mean it's a piece of equipment they did not identify for the photographer.

sure, that guy is standing in front of some machinery from one of NASA's rockets or other devices but, either the device itself was never catalogued or the photographer never found out where the decive came from.

It's no unidentified as in alien, it's unidentified as in those photos you see from celeb gatherings where they list the celebs and "unidentified guest"

looks to me like a mixing tank of some sort possibly for the oxygen system on the apollo missions far too small to be a rocket motor at best a stabilizer motor for when in space to change orientation and such my two cents anyways
