Hello ATSers!

Advances in 3D technology are happening and happening fast.

news.cnet.com...

We still have a ways to go until your iPhone 10g comes with a 3D video camera. Once 3D can be done with a single camera (without post production) it will only be a matter of time until we are watching 3D video of people's encounters with the paranormal. This is an exciting direction that may lead to better explanations of anomalous events, which would do us all some good. The large majority of video that is unexplained can be attributed to angle, light, and shadow. In 2D imagery these affects can make common object look other worldly. 3D imagery will allow for fewer of these types of submitted material leaving us a smaller pool to disect. But just how far off are we?

Having a 3D TV that doesn't need glasses is only half the battle. 3D is still captured two different ways.

1. By using two cameras, either side by side or top and bottom.

images.vizworld.com...

2. By using a 2D camera to capture a subject and later adding the "stereo" in a post production environment. Such as Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

But there is new technology on the horizon the may just cut out the need for all the bulky gear.

Yes, we have a ways to go until this is a standard feature on every new cell phone. However, in 10-20 years we may be watching crude video of a UFO shutting down a Chinese airport...in 3D!!

This is what I am waiting for, it is going to be fun to eventually be able to interact with your TV shows, kind of like those books where you choose the path, loads more options that way, different strokes you know...

Also to see it all life like in a solid holographic format will be a real enjoyment.

You'd feel like you were sitting in the Temple for example with a Master overlooking the heights of the Himalayas while the Llamas Chant softly in the back ground.

Or perhaps in a gunfight in the old west.

It will be the same technology, and it is going to revolutionise the way we interact with the real and the parareal.

I think it would be a gift and a curse. Imagine how much more annoying commercials will be. Your watching your favorite show them BAM! A box of tampons comes flying out of the screen.

3D techology has certainly progressed at an amazing pace, and it seems ever since Avatar came out the movie industry has really embraced and utilizes 3D tech, even to the point of going back on already shot movies and adding the 3D effects ALA Clash of the Titans etc...It would very very interesting to be able to shoot HD 3D video on personal cams or phones, however Im afraid the even should one be able to film a UFO in 3D it would still just be a unknown point of light in a dark sky with no points of reference or fuzzy indistinct blobs in the sky again with no refrenence point or so badly out of focus as to render the vid un-usable. that's my Opinion anyway,

You can capture HD 3D with one camera already!!!! It is the Panasonic AG-3DA1. You can view camera specs here.

I had the pleasure to work on the filming of 2 TV shows for WealthTV, both shot with this camera. The footage is truly amazing. The camera is considered "low cost" by any HD professional, but it still is a lot of fun to work with. The software used in post is CineForm & Premiere CS5.

Here are two industry articles on the 1st show filmed:
TV Technology
3D Today

And the show's fb page (if you dare!) Facebook 3 Cities in 3D
