PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A college student jumped to his death off a bridge a day after authorities say two classmates surreptitiously recorded him having sex with a man in his dorm room and broadcast it over the Internet.

Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi jumped from the George Washington Bridge last week, said his family's attorney, Paul Mainardi. Police recovered a man's body Wednesday afternoon in the Hudson River just north of the bridge, and authorities were trying to determine if it was Clementi's.

ABC News and The Star-Ledger of Newark reported that Clementi left on his Facebook page on Sept. 22 a note that read: "Jumping off the gw bridge sorry." On Wednesday, his Facebook page was accessible only to friends.

Two Rutgers freshmen have been charged with illegally taping the 18-year-old Clementi having sex and broadcasting the images via an Internet chat program.

Steven Goldstein, chairman of the gay rights group Garden State Equality, said in a statement Wednesday that his group considers Clementi's death a hate crime.

Not sure which forum to put this in so feel free to move.

This was on the front page of yahoo.com's news. This event is pretty depressing. 2 "friends" secretly film their other friend having sex with another man. What were those 2 kids thinking? Im not really able to understand what would be going through their minds.

I can only imagine how the kids real friends think about the 2 that videotaped him.

Another tragic and needless death.

His friends thought it was a laugh and the poor guy could not live with his shame.

I do not blame his friends - it was a stupid and immature thing to do but they are very young.

I am sure this has taught them a lifelong lesson. And they will probably never get over the horror of having an innocent death on their hands.

Yeah, some people seem to think its okay to be jerks so long as they're hiding behind a computer monitor. There's a such thing as a light-hearted jest or posting a viral video of someone being silly but invading someone's privacy and posting video of their most vulnerable intimate activities just to get a few views is really really really really low.

If he is a homosexual he should not kill himself over it, unless he is ashamed. Societies "norm" kills too many people, yes it was invading his privacy but he shouldn't be ashamed of who he was.

This is very sad
I have the feeling the boy must have been mentally unstable. while it would have been embarrassing and humiliating, people forget these things fairly quickly. I wouldn't exactly call this cyber bulling. Cyber bulling can only happen if you let it. Months or even weeks down the road people would have forgotten You can't let what other people think or say have that much control over your life.

I really feel bad for this guy, why come to such a drastic decision to suicide, and his friend - did he really think at all when he video taped this act? hopefully he will spend time in jail.

This is an upsetting and unfortunate story really. They were at College, so to be fair, the type of 'prank' the friends were part of by filming the male having sex happens all the time. Just friends taking the piss out of and embarrasing eachother. Unfortunately, that is what male teenagers do.

I'm sure they couldn't have predicted he would have commited suicide. A series of unfortunate events, in my opinion.

Stupid and immature doesn't even begin to describe what those kids did to him. When I was in college, I made plenty of mistakes that I wish I could take back, but what these kids did is despicable. I'm sure they didn't expect him to kill himself, but they knew that posting the videos would make his life a living hell. They were not his friends, because no real friend would ever even think of doing something like that. I really hope that they both get at least a couple of years in prison. They deserve it. They also deserve the guilt that they will have to live with forever.

People forget about these things pretty quickly? No you are wrong. These kids took an intimate moment, videotaped it without his knowledge, then posted it for everyone to watch. That is traumatizing. Some people may never get over something like that. He obviously couldn't handle the repurcussions of his roomates despicable actions. That doesn't make him mentally unstable.

I see they're in court this month but the suicide is being kept out of the case altogether. As if the suicide had nothing to do with what they did. That seems very unfair, but it is a complicated story. I wouldn't like to see the "friends" punished too much for a wicked prank that went very wrong. If they could have foreseen the effects that prank would have had on him I really don't think they'd have been so cruel. But you never know. It's a shame all round, most especially for the dead boy. He must have been terrified and humiliated.

Hate crime? PLUH-EASE. The guys who filmed this are obviously homosexual themselves since they were filming impromtu gay porn.

I am not saying what they did is ethical or legal; I'm just saying that they're gay.
