9/11 family support group slams 'disrespect' of Sept. 11 NYC mosque protest

A protest organized by an inflammatory right-wing blogger and planned for New York's Ground Zero on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks appears to have severely tweaked the leader of a 9/11 family support group, who sent out an open letter on Tuesday castigating the organizer's "disrespect" for those who died.

This is about a 9/11 family support group that would like the organizers of the protest to change the date of the protest (9/11/2010) or, barring that, for planned speakers and attendees to pull out.

The protest is being organized by Pamela Geller (Atlas Shrugged), an participants are to include former UN ambassador John Bolton, Andrew Breitbart, and Geert Wilders. Newt Gingrich was also to appear or deliver a speech via video but has canceled and no one seems to know why.

As the article states, this does not mean all 9/11 families feel the same way about the planned Islamic center, but it is just another indication that there are two sides to this issue that has everyone so divided.

More information about the letter at the additional news link. Here is a excerpt of the letter...

As most of you probably know there is a proposed protest rally against the mosque being planned for 9/11. There are also reports that there is a pro mosque rally in the works for 9/11 as well. … We have always stood against any rallies scheduled for September 11th and we will do so again with these events.

We will be joining other 9/11 organizations in asking that the organizers change the date for these events. If they refuse to change the date we will also ask those scheduled to appear to withdraw from the events.

Over the past 9 years more and more of what’s been going on at Ground Zero has excluded the families. …

We will never support such activities that disrespect the memories of our loved ones on this sacred day at this sacred site.

I do think that picking this date for the protest is as disrespectful as the organizers claim the planned Islamic center is.
