August 18, 2010 (OCEAN TOWNSHIP, N.J.) -- Police say a homeless man lived unnoticed in the basement of a New Jersey library for nearly two weeks. Police say a custodian saw Charles Jones Jr. peeking out a basement window of the Ocean Township library in Monmouth County on Friday night. Neptune police Detective Lt. Steven Peters says Jones told officers he had been living in the building. Police discovered several books in the basement and found the 26-year-old had taken food from the employee break room. Jones was released on a criminal summons. He's charged wit

That sucks..why didn't they just let him go with a warning?

he wasn't hurting anything or being destructive..

At first I was gonna say well, would you want some kid squatting in your home for two weeks, raiding your fridge?

But then I realized, wait a minute, he was living in the library a public tax payer funded building.

Doesnt that technically mean he has part ownership of the building?

How come he cannot use a facility his money and taxes and his families taxes paid for?

So I agree with OP, how wrong to arrest him, and I hope he gets a good lawyer.

Poor guy.

if you really think about this it's kind of messed up. we have to sleep it's not optional, it's not like we say "i think i might sleep tonight" we absolutely have to. so how is sleeping outside illegal? it's not like you can just stop sleeping. being homeless shouldn't be illegal, doing your basic biological processes isn't an option and should not be criminalized.

our public library has a fair share of homeless men that sort of hang out there.
read the mags/use the puter/ a bird bath in the restroom/ its air conditioned..
if that is what a man is down to , i dont see fit to make his life any harder.
but technically he broke the law- maybe the judge will go easy on him.
he could do community service at the library he's so fond of.

One of the things the career homeless learn is that you have to
stay out of sight of the machine.

If you are too visible they will harass you.

Out of sight and out of mind is what they want.

A lot of areas panhandling is illegal and they enforce it.

With over 20 million out of work and over 1.5 million bankruptcies
this past 12 months alone there are gonna be a lot more ppl
down on their luck.

Also if you think it is bad now, you have not seen anything.

Have survival knowledge and tools ready to go if you are
in a financial bind and the world is falling apart around you.

Good Luck to all the good ppl !

Should try the old Church trick, what is it? "repent x3" shouted out loud at the Altar, and it waivers you homeless and grants you freedom to the Church.

By obligation to moral code (biblical law) the priest has to accomodate the person in need, as its a sin not to help a fellow man, as the police are on duty they are legally not entitled to adhere to religious code while in uniform. And they obviously can't make official arrests outside their shift (it would be considered assault.)

i think he's allowed to use the library during Library Hours...
why should he have special use of the library denied to everyone else...
