General Petraeus issued new guidelines for rules of engagement in Afghanistan.

By prioritising efforts to earn the trust of the Afghan people, the US general countered concerns that he would relax strict rules of engagement that have angered some troops, who say they put them at greater risk when fighting insurgents.

In a way he is addressing the concerns general McChrystal was worried about... without criticizing the administration.

One could see this from two sides.

First, he doesnt want to be on the chopping block that fell both of his predecessors.
Second, all of that leaked data has taken its toll and now they have to publicly make sweeping changes to their attack plan.

I personally dont care what the reason is as long as the job gets done and they stop killing civilians. War is crazy and collateral damage is to be expected, but I think in recent years, they have just been getting out of hand.

Perhaps this will also help ease the problems that soldiers are having with their duties. A soldier can sleep knowing he defended, but killing innocents is one of the problems so many are having while there and when rotating home.

You summed it up right. I think he is doing the right thing. McChrystal had nice ideas, but there is a way to address those problems without bringing them on public place and criticizing your bosses.

What, still the insurgents talk?

Afghanistan has gone on longer now than Vietnam.

Bring our soldiers home, NOW!

What again is the Objective? Create another government in Afghanistan.

Then where to next, Pakistan?

Let us take a look at a couple maps shall we. Since we never actually get any information from our dear leaders, we have to scour the net for info.

Anyway, I think empire should be withdrawn to non police action positions.

Just me though.
