Found this to be quite interesting especially that they are using an experimental magnetic shield......

In all honesty - I'm in favor of a plasma shield. While it would require us to refine our technology quite a bit (and develop a better understanding of plasma behavior) - the benefits are far greater with - theoretically - a very similar amount of power (energy necessary to sustain a plasma field is not all that great, but our applications have difficulty exploiting the theory - AKA efficiency problems).

First, you can contain an atmosphere and keep it at a pressure. That means space-walks without the need for a suit (though thermal extremes may not make it a simple matter of walking outside to fix that rattle driving you nuts).

Plasmas also neutralize a lot of particle radiation (and would protect against micro-meteorites and high-velocity space dust that can cause some severe problems).

Plasmas effectively become very large faraday cages - which neutralizes a lot of potentially hazardous EMF.

That also means, given the correct technology, you could modify the shape of your plasma field to use it as a radio-telescope, a radio/radar antenna, and a variety of other useful things.
