Franks heads to gulf; troops rehearse

March 11 � Gen. Tommy Franks, the U.S. commander who would direct a war against Iraq, was making his way to his Persian Gulf headquarters Tuesday as tens of thousands of troops either practiced or readied equipment for battle. The preparations included both building and dismantling barriers: creating a fake front line complete with a sand barrier in the Kuwaiti desert and breaking down fences to let tanks and armored vehicles move north into Iraq, if necessary....
