Pentagon Clamps Down on Military's Interaction With Media After McChrystal's Ouster

The Pentagon is cracking down on the U.S. military's interaction with the media, tightening up the rules of engagement in the wake of the top general in Afghanistan losing his job for his comments in a magazine article.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates issued an order late Friday telling military officials that they will need Pentagon clearance for interviews and other dealings with reporters.

In the brief memo to military and civilian personnel worldwide and effective immediately, Gates tells officials to make sure they are not going out of bounds or unintentionally releasing information

here we go the total control of the first ammendment in regards to the military's interaction with its people. wikileaks will be destroyed along with any whistleblower warning the people of government and military intentions and subsequent actions. goodbye freedom of speach and democracy and hello censorship and tyrany. and right before the 4th of july...this is a disgrace

Uh no, it's what they should have done a long time ago. Military officers do not have wholesale freedom of speech. They are to be in compliance with the UCMJ in their speech when in uniform. If you want to be able to say what you want, when you want to then you better not join the military. If these rules had been effect a few months ago McChrystal would still have his job.
