NEWS: Terry Nichols' Jury Deadlocked on Sentencing, Will Not Face Death Penalty, page 1

After 19 hours of deliberations, the jury in Terry Nichols' state murder trial has deadlocked. This means Nichols, the accused co-conspiritor in the Oklahoma City bombing, will not face the death penalty. He will be sentenced to life in prison, which he is already serving under a Federal conviction.

The panel's deadlock means Pittsburg County District Judge Steven Taylor will be forced to sentence Nichols to life in prison. Under state law, only a jury can level a death sentence.

Twice Friday jurors came to Taylor and said they were having trouble reaching a unanimous sentence. Twice Taylor sent the panel back to continue their deliberations.

The third time the jury returned, about 7:30 p.m., they indicated a unanimous decision was impossible.

The 1995 bombing of the Alfred P Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City, OK killed 163 people. Nichols was convicted and sentenced to life without parole in the death of the Federal agents who died that day.

Timothy McVeigh was sentenced to death for his role in the bombing. His sentence was carried out on June 12, 2001 in Terre Haute, IN.
