Nelson Mandela's great-granddaughter was killed in a car crash last night on her way home from a concert in Soweto to celebrate the opening of the World Cup in South Africa today.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation said Zenani Mandela, 13, died in an accident involving one car. No one else was injured.

A police spokesman said Zenani, one of Mandela's nine great-grandchildren, had been travelling with his former wife, Winnie Madikizela.

The former South African president, 91, was expected to take some part in today's opening day festivities, although his family is worried about his health.

"The family has asked for privacy as they mourn this tragedy," the foundation said in a statement.

A tragic loss for the Mandela family in this time of celebration for the nation of South Africa. The World Cup is the perfect showcase to present the new South Africa to the world and Mandela would be proud of his nation.
I'm sure many hearts go out to his family at this time.

Yeah, road deaths affect us all.

Just a decent reminder, if any of you are in SA for the fun, you're more likely to die on our roads than suffer lead poisoning (being shot).

You're more likely to be shot in JHB than Baghdad.

Think about that.

Drive safely.

That is true about car accidents affecting us all.
And i don't know much about SA but there was also another crash killing some English students as well.

Just goes to show that no matter the celebration or the person, no one is immune from tradgedy.
