The FBI denied today suggestions that it moved too slowly after monitoring alleged extortion payments to murder suspect Joran van der Sloot, allowing him to travel to Peru where he admits he killed a woman he met in a casino.

It does seem like taking action on his extortion of the family would have prevented this young girls murder.

They were certainly just waiting to try to compile evidence to implicate him further in Halloway's murder. I can understand that reasoning to a point, but that failure to act did pretty much lead to another girl's death.

They likely should have just taken the extortion charge, and imprisoned him for that. He's likely to confess, or otherwise implicate himself in that case.

Hindsight is great, huh?

Guess the FBI's crystal ball was on the fritz that day.

Just like the Van der Sloot's was when they conceived this....young man.

People are saying that the FBI provided the 25k payment that paid for the trip. If this is true, wow.

It boils down to, they had a criminal that they knew was a criminal. Instead of enforcing the law, they simply chose not to. The rationale? To give him the opportunity to screw up more and dig a deeper hole. Ok, so this is the epitome of entrapment, but worse is basically a policy of allowing people to be further victimized by a known criminal.

We will see. The FBI denies providing the cash. But, of course they would. We will see how it plays out

I've heard different stories.

But it does seem like the FBI did pay the 15,000$ wire payment. Conflicting reports about rather the family, of the FBI paid the the 10,000$ cash payment.

And its not exactly entrapment. Entrapment would closer resemble an undercover approaching him and offering money for information regarding Halloway.

I say prostitution stings are entrapment, although many can contend that it was illegal behavior the "john" would have otherwise engaged in.

I haven't heard the FBI is denying they provided the cash for a sting? The money was wired from Birmingham, Al. to his personal account in the Netherlands, but come to think of it, it was never stated who the "sender" was. I'm thinking it would have been sent under the Holloway's name, even if it was the FBI's money. Of course.

Reportedly, they were giving him some time to see if he would provide information to Beth, as they thought it was fair to her. In hindsight, even the idea that he might be honest about that is crazy.

But it is creepy that he used government money to finance his murderous trip.

I imagine whoever did send the money is kicking themselves with regret.
It was indeed a blunder, however unintentional.

my wife was flipping the channels, and i think it was nancy grace (she annoys me, and i was annoyed at the time) was running a story on the denial. i dunno...one of those talking heads.

i believe them waiting to arrest him was an act to let him dig a deeper hole. I disagree with that tactic. Criminals will continue doing crime until they are caught.

I can't believe that the deal was even ever brokered. The nerve, you know?
