It's just a piece of cloth...

There are some things that are actually important. The symbol of our country is the American Flag. Every nation in this world has a flag of their own and flying it is the pride of every nation. As it should be.

If there is one position, one person, in this entire world that should understand the meaning of our flag, the importance of our flag, and what it represents -- it is the freaking President.

We are separated by religion. We are divided by our political ideals. We are constantly battling sterotypes and walking a fine line of racial equality. We are estranged by labels of have and have nots. We are faced with the growing challenge of accepting "outsiders", maintaining our culture, while still respecting theirs.

There is but one thing that every American in this country has in common and one symbol that every American can proudly stand behind without fear of offending another that stands beside us -- and that is the American Flag.

It is not a piece of cloth. You should be ashamed for saying so and should apologize to every person that has lost their life defending the right for our flag to fly.

For crying out loud!

Don't even think of telling me every American feels like you here as I have seen so many satirical impressions of mindless flag flyers, in many different American comedies and other shows, from the Simpsons on.

"flying it is the pride of every nation"

Nope. In actual fact, the public flying of the British or English flag is seen as quite embarrassing and cringe worthy, unless there is a big international football compitition on (like now, with the World cup) but maybe the UK is alone in this mindset but I can certainly say that no European country feels a particular, passionate pride in flying their flag. It is a piece of cloth.

"There is but one thing that every American in this country has in common and one symbol that every American can proudly stand behind without fear of offending another that stands beside us -- and that is the American Flag."

Well, that's a real shame. Here in Britain and Europe we have plenty of things we can all stand behind and feel proud of, we don't need a cloth for that. We certainly don't need the weird indoctrination you lot have from birth. What Americans go through with their flag is no different than the propaganda communist countries have gone through with pictures of their glorious leader.

Maybe people who don't really know their true history and don't have enough local knowledge, or to be learned enough to feel pride through knowledge of their countries past, will need an icon to get behind but it's an extremely empty statement. Other countries know enough about their history that they don't need to be told, they just naturally feel proud or not when thinking of certain events. Saluting the flag, the allegiance thingy, well Pavlov's dog springs to mind.

"It is not a piece of cloth. You should be ashamed for saying so and should apologize to every person that has lost their life defending the right for our flag to fly."

He shouldn't feel ashamed in the slightest. Not only was what he said completely, factually correct but only the most confused and mindlessly patriotic would suggest he was wrong or that he should feel shamed.
Fighting for the right for your flag to fly, eh? How very romantic.

It's cloth. As is ours but none of us are going to cry is it gets a bit muddy. None of us lot are going to burst blood vessels if someone doesn't salute it on sight.

What a confused and confusing culture you Americans are!

Suffice it to say that if a President is giving a speech in a foreign country at a nuclear summit with many foreign nations or as our present President performing the duties of the head of the United Nations Security council he is not likely to have an American flag present as it does not directly pertain to the American people - He is not directly addressing the American people.

Just like the speech our present President gave from Berlin in front of Hitlers Reichstag monument. I don't think an American flag would be warranted, and again he was not directly addressing the American people.

Sorry my point was also that the angle of the camera might give a false impression as well. I don't know of this is the case in this still?

FWIW in all the photos I posted there are other photos showing the flag but from other angles .

Have you ever heard any of his supporters use his middle name???

Yes. I already gave one:

The song and whoever wrote it is obviously not against Obama.

Obama gives his full name taking the oath. He's not ashamed of it and announces his full name in a move of formalism:

There are examples all over the place.

It's just his name, folks. Frankly, I don't see much of a difference from 'Barack' or 'Obama' than I do 'Hussein.'

Do we need to walk on eggshells around that one, too? Should we call him 'Barry O' as to make him sound more 'Christian Western?'

PC overboard, IMO.

It's his name. Use discernment to tell the difference between the formal 'Barack Hussein Obama' and the 'Barack Hussein Obama the MUSLIM ANTICHRIST! Spooooooooky' crowd.

There IS a moderate medium.
Let's not get so silly we're too scared to say someone's NAME in fear of getting labeled a bigot. lol

Tearman, the whole point of a flag is to divide people. By definition, it's what they do.

I think EVERY American has a right to hate America, even the President.

Now that's freedom!

But he is the 1st sitting president to hold office during the worst oil spill in American history.

Now that's a fact.

Seriously now, he may be for world government and all that but to criticize something so arbitrary with such vitriol is bordering on hysteria.

It is not just a piece of cloth. Thousands of people ave lost their lives to let that flag hang wave. For Barack Obama to not respect that so close to Memorial Day is a crime. I wish someone would assassinate him already.

Your flag may not mean anything to YOU or the people where you come from, but the people in this country, especially the ones who have fought and given everything under that flag see things a little differently.

So....all due respect....but you do what you do in "Europa" and let Americans address American problems. Quite frankly, nobody would expect you to understand.

Un-Fricken-Believable I guess I am not suprised.

After all during his campaing he failed to wear a Flag pin or put his hand over his heart.

Can we find some legal way to remove this fool out of office.

I would like my kids to have a future other than involuentary servitude.

When your the CEO of the corporation "UNITED STATES" you dont need to appear in front of the flag that represents the dejur country "united States."

A lot of people simply do not realize thats all he is. He is not the real president of the real Republic "The united States of America."

Do the research for your self.

The people who are defending Obama on this thread would probably still defend him if a red flag with a hammer and sickle were behind him at press conferences.

Would you say "Oh, it's just a piece of cloth, it doesn't mean anything."

Really? Do you see the point yet? It DOES mean something. And the fact that it is MISSING means something as well, so it IS A BIG DEAL. It is intentional, it is a carefully crafted image that has a purpose that I am not comfortable with.

You are one of the most ludicrous, ridiculous posters I've ever seen on this site!

Can you imagine the kind of competition you are up against? Yet you come top. I suppose that's an achievement of sorts.

You know now that I have had a few moments to reflect and cool off.

I think this is fantastic!

No flag pin on the shirt while out canvasing for votes.

Now no flag a a press confrence...

Soon we shall see if he attends the wreath laying.

This can't get any better for America!

When the Revolution Starts the US military is gonna side with the patriots!

Edit for spelling. 'I wish I were still 5'
