i read a while back that a persons Sleeping habits can be related to their DNA makeup.

Early Birds, Night Owls: Blame Your Genes
James Owen
for National Geographic News
January 28, 2008

Those who struggle to get out of bed in the morning may be able to hold their genes responsible, new research suggests.

Scientists have discovered that a person's waking habits are mirrored by body cells that are equipped with their own daily alarm clocks.

Larks and Night Owls

Suitable volunteers were recruited by the study team using TV advertisements shown between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

"We got both our early types and our late types that way," Brown said. "Some had not yet gone to bed, while others were already up."

Skin cells taken from the volunteers were cultured in the lab and injected with a bioluminescence gene found in fireflies.

I feel sorry for my kids then. They will drift meaninglessly through the evening never finding a true bed to feel welcome. You see my wife is a morning person, I work all night and love it. It is a forbidden love I know but bigots be damned. We love each other and no taunts or threats will ever get us to go back to our own kind.

Nah, that's me....*smirk*

On topic tho....I have been a "night owl" since my mid teens I guess...I simply function better when I don't have to keep business hours and can sleep from mid morning (say 6am) till mid arvo (around 3pm)...

I just have more energy, am more alert, better concentration and better mood than I do when I have to sleep from say, 11pm-7am...

Probably genetic in my case given its been that way from such an early age I spose....

I think there are more like us than most think. I work 11pm to 7am and there are many lights on in houses and apartments than you would think. Granted some just go to sleep with them on, but you come out for a break and lights are on that were off before. I just wish the world was more accomodating to those of our ilk. If I want to go for a beer after work I am forced to go to the casino and pay through the nose for a skooy. I cannot just go and buy any anywhere else, because of inane licensing laws that idiots have managed to get tighter over the last decade spoiling those of us that never go and cause trouble at night. For how can we? We are at work. During the day... well thats a different story. I do wonder if there were enough nightshifters going out and causing trouble in the early afternoon could we spoil the rest of the worlds fun and get drinking establishments banned from serving drinks until say 2am.

Heh

That would be hilarious !

Nightshifters peeing in public places, glassing people, throwing up on people and generally causing mayhem at 2pm cos they're pissed

Here, here !

Lets make liquor licenses say 6am till 4pm or something like that...That will stop the hoons and bogans who work business hours causing mayhem in our CBD's...

I hear ya about the price of beer @ casinos...At James' House of Pain (formerly Kerry & Lloyd's House of Pain, A.K.A Crown), the beer prices are borderline robbery...I used to drink there after work when I did the 4pm-12am shift at Hell$tra Pig Bong tech support years ago, and it wasn't cheap...

However...You can still enjoy a cig with your beer indoors in some parts of the casino, which is a rarity these days...

Let's do it. This is now an official call to arms for Night Owls. First we need a good name for ourselves. Maybe Bill of Nights? The Nightmare? Reclaim the Afternoon? When Day Becomes Night? Night of the Drinking Dead?

Any bright spark with a better one? I bet there is. My intake has been low today, so my smarty-pants aren't on yet.

All my life i have been a day person. Well except for a small time during my late teens early tweentys, when i partied too much. I have worked days and love it. I stay up till 11pm or midnight and go to bed to get up at 6am. I have been doing this for so many years i cant even remember how long. I know its not good to live with that little sleep all your life and well maybe so but i will sleep enough when i am dead.

Anyways the point is i now work nights I had to take a job at the hospital i am with now because the one i was working for closed down. The only position they had was nights. I didnt wanna do it but its been 2 years now and i am definetly a night person now. I am not sure if there is something to this DNA thing. I tend to think alot of who we will become is encoded in DNA but eventually is completely determined by our experiences. In other words we may have a pre disposition to certain trait and likes/dislikes and habits etc etc based on DNA, however what we choose is really ultimately based on experiences.

If so i would never be able to conform to nights the way i have. I cannot sleep at night now on my days off unless i do some serious sleep deprevation when i get off work in the morning. SO on my days off when i need to be back on days and sleep at nigth, i come home at 7am and send my son to school and go to sleep for only 3-4 hours. Then its up all day and sleep at around 10pm that night. Then i am good for the rest of the week i am off. I work 3 on 4 off one week and 4 on 3 off the next. I work all my shifts back to back so its not so hard to do when you get used to it. Problem is sometimes even with that little bit of sleep i still find myself awake all nigth and wanting to sleep again at 8 or 9 am.
