dead alive was an excellent movie. also, if no one has seen it, the movie "undead" portrays zombies and infection in a different light. in it, the bacteria, virus, radiation, whatever, is brought to earth by a comet or asteroid. there are a group of aliens who do nothing but follow this cestial body to planets and cure it's inhabitants. good, movie, and imo, hillarious at times.
as far as the eating of the flesh, the theory has always been, that your basist of instincts survives. first and foremost that's eating. and since zombies, or ghouls as romero often reffered to them, until the end of dawn of the dead, don't have the ability to butcher, or create fire, raw flesh is the only option. however, most movies have taken for granted that zombies only eat humans, this is incorrect, as per romero. there are scenes in the original '68 night of the living dead, as well as tom savini's 1990 remake, where they eat worms and field mice. it's just meat, man.
in my eyes, the reason for the resurgence in zombie films is indeed the current state of global politics. even george has said that's what his films are, political commentary.
that being said, i think another reason may in fact be, those of us who pay attention to the world around us, even those who are viewed as paranoid, and nutbags, see the state of science and medicine we've come to. we've gotten to a point where, i think we're trying to play god more and more. we want to turn back time, be younger and live forever. i've always said this is just bad news. when you look at drugs like viagra, cialis, rogaine, etc. they essentially, reanimate, or reactivate, dead and dyining part os the body, (bascally, without having a deep biochemical discussion). the problem is, more and more people are using these "pharmacueticals" at younger and younger ages, mostly for recreational purposes.
these haven't been on the market long enough, imo, to know what the serious long term effects will be. this coupled with other drugs on the market, there use to be a drug called "quicken" i believe, that, by lenghtening the synapses, thus increasing reaction time, due the short distance the impulse had to "jump". it was said, that an hour after one dose when tested, subject were actually faster, could prove to indeed create and actual zombie. (as it takes a little while for the electrical energy in the body to dissapate.)
also, any number of other things, radiation, viruses, parasites, disease, as crazy as it sounds could indeed create a zombie. a simple mutation or hybrid of two, "diseases", could also do it. (theoretcially). i could go on for days, and i have, much to the dismay of my friends. lol.
on a personal note, it irritates me to know, that years ago, when i was planning and waiting for an undead epidemic, everyone was calling me nuts, or crazy... or just plain stupid. but now it appears they all seem to think, for some reason, they are experts on zombies, simply because they've seen a few movies. they have no theories other than what they've seen in said movies and definately no actual original ideas on what they'd do if, when, it happens.
"i'm going to the mall..." that's what i hear the most.. well, good for you. you go right ahead and go to the mall.. idiots. gotta love hollywood. my other favorite is.. "i'm coming to your house." no. no you're not. if you want to get left outside and become a snack. go right ahead and come to my place.
people talking about packing assault type weopons, .223 or other "large caliber" guns... sure.. the look cool.. but really?
most people have some kind of disaster plan, hurricanes, blizzards, civil unrest, etc. but, they plan specifically for that disaster. what happens if you've planned for a blizzard, but loe and behold, your town breaks into a state of martial law for some reason, now instead of needing 3 or four days of food, you're locked inside for two weeks while the government regains control?
imo, prepare for a class 3, undead epidemic, keep a g.o.o.d. bag, on hand and you'll be ready for anything.
