Here is video of Charles Krauthammer discussing the Obama Administration's "Financial Reform Bill." He said it would provide "no check, no balance" for Executive power. Passage of what Obama is proposing would represent Congress "voluntarily emasculating itself." The bill would allow the President to seize financial institutions without consent of Congress, if it deems the institution to be "too risky."

I can't wait to see the long string of "We can't let the evil wall street types get away with theft anymore" loon bags start posting.

"Those who surrender their liberty for security deserve neither."

[This essay was first published as a monograph in 1938, now republished in Ex-America, copyright Caxton Press.]

There are those who still think they are holding the pass against a revolution that may be coming up the road. But they are gazing in the wrong direction. The revolution is behind them. It went by in the Night of Depression, singing songs to freedom.

There are those who have never ceased to say very earnestly, "Something is going to happen to the American form of government if we don't watch out." These were the innocent disarmers. Their trust was in words. They had forgotten their Aristotle.

More than 2,000 years ago he wrote of what can happen within the form, when "one thing takes the place of another, so that the ancient laws will remain, while the power will be in the hands of those who have brought about revolution in the state."

Until it was too late, few understood one like Julius C. Smith, of the American Bar Association, saying,

Is there any labor leader, any businessman, any lawyer or any other citizen of America so blind that he cannot see that this country is drifting at an accelerated pace into administrative absolutism similar to that which prevailed in the governments of antiquity, the governments of the Middle Ages, and in the great totalitarian governments of today? Make no mistake about it. Even as Mussolini and Hitler rose to absolute power under the forms of law … so may administrative absolutism be fastened upon this country within the Constitution and within the forms of law.

Julius C. Smith

that's all I can say.

Ultimately there are always checks and balances to government positions and actions. It really depends on how far the people are willing to go and what they consider means for action.

Compare and contrast the following:

US Constitution

Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Ohio Constitution

§ 04 Bearing arms; standing armies; military powers (1851)

The people have the right to bear arms for their defense and security; but standing armies, in time of peace, are dangerous to liberty, and shall not be kept up; and the military shall be in strict subordination to the civil power.

But also notice this in the Ohio Constitution that is not specifically listed in the US Constitution but is understood to be a fundamental right of the People by virtue of the Preamble that establishes the US.

§ 02 Right to alter, reform, or abolish government, and repeal special privileges (1851)

All political power is inherent in the people. Government is instituted for their equal protection and benefit, and they have the right to alter, reform, or abolish the same, whenever they may deem it necessary; and no special privileges or immunities shall ever be granted, that may not be altered, revoked, or repealed by the general assembly.

Yes, and many seem numb to the situation I believe we are facing.

If the former Soviet bloc countries are any indication, it will be when enough people realize that there as been a de facto establishment of a class system (be it a of worker and privileged or governed and ruler) and decide that is not the way it is supposed to be at all despite repeated reassuring lies that it has not become that way.

Basically when enough notice that all they may have is cold beans and bread while others dine on steak dinners.
