I went through a period of my life where I listened, very intently, to several of these guys. Seemed to make a lot of sense back then. Actually more involved than tax protesting, but that is clearly for another thread.

Anyway, the only and I mean only scheme I have seen won year in and out is the contractor who pays his contract employees in face value of coinage. Sounds real simple, and the bids placed by his subs have been upheld in court due to very technical reasons.

It just doesn't matter if you give a guy a $20 gold piece and call it $20. Many IRS agents have argued that it's not money, but the intrinsic value is more than $20, but the court system seems to think it is just $20. Same applies to silver coinage a quarter is a quarter and four of them are $1.

I first heard the 16th amendment argument in a John Birch meeting back in the early 70's. Bircher's seem more manly back then than they do now, just a personal opinion.
