Singing the Blues – deeper and deeper

www.telegraph.co.uk

The pitch of the blues is changing and nobody knows why. Blue whales – the largest creatures to have lived – are now singing at increasingly lower frequencies all over the world.

The songs are already more like growls, so deep that they are barely audible to humans. Ten distinct ones have been identified in different regions. Each has remained essentially the same for decades, apart from the falling frequencies.

Interesting that they seem to have different voices in different regions, almost like human languages.

Although the cause of the change is unknown, some theorize it may not be a negative sign. Deeper voices could be the sign of larger body mass emerging as whales are hunted less.

Any of you geniuses want to take a shot at theorizing the reasons for this tonal shift?
