3 killed when two planes collide near Colorado airport

www.cnn.com

(CNN) -- Two planes collided in midair Saturday in Boulder, Colorado, killing three people, authorities said.

Rick Brough of the Boulder County Sheriff's Department did not release any information regarding the victims, and it was not immediately clear how many people were on board the planes when they collided.

One of the planes was towing a glider. After the collision, the pilot of the glider was able to detach from the plane and land safely, Brough said.

Brough could not identify the type of planes involved. He said the debris field was spread out over a couple of miles.

Well this is unfortunate.

Those people in the glider must be pretty shook up. No details on how the crash happened yet and there is still speculation as to how many people were on board.

These things are happening at ever increasing rates it seems. Mind you this is probably the result of human error and judging by the picture the skies seem a little bit dark.

Thoughts ATS?

It was likely a flying club if there was a glider being towed, the traffic control is probably a little informal for something like that, and lots of take off's and landings of light aircraft, not to mention gliders complicate things as powered aircraft have to give way.

Unfortunate, but it happens. - That parachute being deployed with no one on the end is odd though, don't know how that would happen.
