Whistleblower Web Site Goes Dark, Seeks Funding

www.foxnews.com

A Web site that for years has let anonymous whistleblowers break stories of corruption and government malfeasance has gone dark and is expected to remain offline until it finds funds to support its operations and fend off lawsuits.

Well, well what do we have here? Is this a simple matter of funding or perhaps a more nefarious reason looms.

Wikileaks.org has always been sort of a clearing house for whistleblowers from many fields. It may be that a sensitive report was about to go public and the shutdown occurred.

Perhaps some of you have more indepth knowledge concerning Wikileaks. I'd be interested to hear your take.

I just went to www.wikileaks.com and it seems it is true. The front page has message:

To concentrate on raising the funds necessary to keep us alive into 2010, we have very reluctantly suspended all other operations, until Jan 11.

The Sunshine Press (WikiLeaks) is an non-profit organization funded by human rights campaigners, investigative journalists, technologists and the general public. Through your support we have exposed significant injustice around the world—successfully fighting off over 100 legal attacks in the process. Although our work produces reforms daily and is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the 2008 Economist Freedom of Expression Award as well as the 2009 Amnesty International New Media Award, these accolades do not pay the bills. Nor can we accept government or corporate funding and maintain our absolute integrity. It is your strong support alone that preserves our continued independence and strength.

We have received hundreds of thousands of pages from corrupt banks, the US detainee system, the Iraq war, China, the UN and many others that we do not currently have the resources to release. You can change that and by doing so, change the world.

Pretty sad an open source such as this will be persecuted by corrupt organisations, govt.

Wikileaks should take their site to the darknet...keep it underground. It would not only provide a level of protection to their mission but also introduce a new round of individuals to peer-to-peer web surfing. If enough people switched, at least for this site alone, the information would still be able to then be disseminated through more general internet channels.
