BANGKOK , Thailand – Christopher Paul NEIL, a Canadian national apprehended in Thailand following INTERPOL’s unprecedented public appeal for help in identifying a man photographed sexually abusing children, has been sentenced by a Bangkok court to 3 years and 3 months in prison. He had pleaded guilty on 12 May to sexually abusing a Thai boy. This is the first of two cases for which Neil was charged.

The court found him guilty of all charges and first sentenced him to 6 years and 6 months, but reduced his sentence on account of his guilty plea. He was also ordered to pay 60,000 Thai Bahts (around 1,800 US dollars) to the family of the victim as compensation.

Project VICO is a success. Yeah Interpol. Hooray for you.
You got a pedophile conviction in Thailand. You are majestic!!

The problem is the sentence. 3 years and 1800 dollar restitution to the victim's family?

Is that what defiling a child gets you? Does not seem that justice is served.
A slight of hand and a wrist slap is all I see accomplished here.

Of all the conceivable crimes, this one inherintly deserves a much stiffer sentence.
How can a pervert like this get less time than the guy that unknowingly downloaded child porn and erased the offending images immediately, yet failed to contact authorities, hence declared a criminal?

Life isn't like a box of chocolates.
Life is simply nuts.

Ever wonder if under a one world government, these crimes would take a westernized view or a moderate view such as those held elsewhere, including Thailand?

I would not dare surmise, since most high level officials seem in the midst of these types of things. Like the midnight white house visits back in the 80's.

Sounds like you and I think alike here.

Happy for the conviction, confused as to the sentence.

That area is a hot bed for child porn and child slavery, so the conviction is fantastic. But the sentence? Sheesh..

Of course I have no idea what it is like in their prison system; it may be bad enough this is a good one. I don't know.

That's all he got? That's not justice that's corruption. I lived in SE Asia 5 years and am all too familiar with this type of filth. Doesn't surprise me though coming from Thailand. Maybe I should go there and get myself jailed just to have some quality time with this degenerate piece of dog feces and then I'll show them what justice really is. I can get pretty creative with a broom and knotted Tshirt gag.

Well you guys are just *guessing* that the sentence is light. "Photographed sexually abusing children" could mean simply feeling a part or purposely "accidentally bumping into them". "Abuse" is a generic term that is meaningless without context. I could call a child "stupid" and technically I'd be a child abuser... but I dare do say if that is the kind of child abuse that does not warrant prison. And I could make a lewd comment like "how's it going hotcake" to a 14 year old girl and that could mean I was sexually abusing a child on some level by law... but three years in prison for that would be mentally insane for those dishing out the punishment!

Now what we are all picturing is the guy pulling off their pants and doing something disgusting. Thats the picture we get when reading about this stuff because they never tell you want really happened and sometimes it is in fact minor and warrants a minor punishment.

I've had my butt felt on before when I was 17 by someone who could have been 18 and if they got three years in prison I'd feel that would be an off-the-wall insanely harsh punishment for them.

Thai prisons are notoriously rough.

I would say he did more than "Bump Into Them"

Three Thai youths told police suspected Canadian pedophile Christopher Paul Neil paid them for sex when they were ages 9 to 14, coming forward this week when he was identified in a global manhunt, police said Thursday.

On August 15, 2008, Christopher Neil was sentenced to 39 months in a Thai prison for posting pornographic photos on the Internet and for molesting and abducting a 14-year-old boy. The original sentence was for six years and six months, but it was reduced by the judge because of Neil's confession. He is scheduled for another trial in October of 2008 for molesting the boy's nine-year-old brother. Neil must also pay the boy's family $1,780 as compensation for the crime.MSNBC: Thai court jails 'swirly-face' Canadian pedophile2
