I experienced an epiphany after reading several post here on ATS.

I was thinking that evil seems to be spreading like wildfire on this planet.

Just as I was beginning to write a reply to another post it hit me.

Evil reigns supreme because we allow it.

We can't use the excuse anymore that we were not aware. There is no knowledge deficit. If anything there a knowledge glut.

I think that we are overwhelmed with too much knowledge and that we feel inadequate to be able to do anything about it so we use the internet to ventilate our confusion, anger and impotence.

We walk away feeling vindicated because at least we spoke out but in the end we do nothing and nothing changes. We allow the evil to continue and to grow.

The internet has become our liberator and our jailer.

I agree. For many it is more than that.

It is their friend, their lover their life.

Few things in this world can meet the levels of engagement for so many people as the internet but I believe that its ability to allow people to do nothing and still feel like they have done something is one of its greatest ills.

Edmund Burke said it first, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

Well, people feel like their hands are tied. It's like being a rat in a cage. You run around in circles looking for a way out, but there isn't one. It causes you be angry and confused, but in the end, there isn't much you can do.

Try this sometime. Start a coversation with someone in a checkout line, elevator etc. If they bother to look up from their i-phone or i-pod 9 times out of 10 they will go out of their way to avoid you. We are losing our ability to connect on some basic level of shared humanity. Sad.

So all we need now is a serious worldwide pandemic and Issac Asimov will have been very close to being prophetic.

People are already more comfortable communicating electronically than face to face so all we have to do is ban all human contact, set up grand scale web cams, mass market those Japanese sex robots and a good part of the game is on.

I don't think internet is particullary evil, to be honest it seems a bit "fanatical" such idea. Internet just like money and sex, can be used to accomplish good things, it's the human mind the one that corrupts such tool.

Ok I know that people nowdays preffer establishing friends through internet, and spend mindless hours knowing about their friends in facebook, wasting time on video games, or searching for pornography. However you have to see the possible aspects about it, Internet is a marvelous way to be in touch with the collective unconsciouss, besides it's a fountain of knowledge for the person that is thirsty of it. Not counting the fact, that thanks to the Internet many people are waking up and starting to realize about the NWO, Illuminati, and such.

Sex, Money, Internet are NOT evil; alienation from the nature + greed+ lust, are ALL evil.

Nobody makes you feel inferior without your permission. It is not an entity, it is some pixels and fiber optic cable. it is what you make of it.

But it may not be the net itself, but the choices, or too many of them.

An interesting book to read is called: The Paradox of Choice. How too much choice can lead to anxiety and depression.

People are evil. People use the internet.

Before the internet you had all kinds of terrible people having terrible conversations, it's just you can read it all now.

I'm sure it hasn't escaped any of you, but I still have to point out the irony of discussing this subject while we're on the internet.

I view the internet and my laptop as tools. I can use them for educational, entertainment, business, or personal purposes. I find the free flow of information, facts, opinions, and theories to be a very positive thing for me personally.

I can't speak for other people however, and it is quite clear to me that alot of people go to far, investing so much of their time and energy into things that many would consider a waste of time. WoW comes to mind

Some people just seem to have a void in their lives, and they attempt to fill it with the internet. We all have vices, whether they be jelly beans, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, the internet, you name it. Too much of a good thing can turn out to be a very very bad thing, right?

Good thread, thought provoking!!

You could not more right and I concede.

I think that the time has come for me to pack it in.

I have been spending way too much useful time here on the internet and definitely too much time at ATS.

I probably will visit from time to time but for now I think I need to bid all you good people adieu.

I don't agree with the OP. I think that people are evil, not the internet.
