Deval Patrick continues the politics of corruption in Massachusetts

Deval Patrick has once again illustrated the vast corruption in Massachusetts politics.

He has agreed to a special election to be held on Jan. 19, 2010 to replace Ted Kennedy as US Senator.

But he also signalled his intention to nominate an interim replacement. He would ask the replacement for his/her 'personal guarantee' that they would not run in the special election.

Yeah, right. We all know about 'personal guarantees' in Massachusetts. Just see Marty Meehan.

Deval is cast from the same mold as Barack, unfortunately.

UPDATE: Governor Deval Patrick announced today that a special election will be held on Jan. 19 to fill the seat vacated by the death of Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

A state legislative committee will hold a hearing next week on a bill to allow Governor Deval Patrick to appoint a temporary replacement for Senator Edward M. Kennedy while a special election is held to fill his seat, a signal that Beacon Hill is moving to accommodate Kennedy's request that Massachusetts maintain two voices in the Senate.

Patrick called Kennedy's final request to change the same law that he had lobbied for, "reasonable". What a joke!

The question I have is if this bill will be retroactive in nature. Not a lawyer, but there seems to be a lot of legal issues in all of this. Could be tied up in court till special election.

"Here's the thing, if we were talking about prospectively doing this for an opening that may come up in the future, that would be one thing," said Tisei. "But we're doing it based on -- there is currently an opening right now, the law that's in place has been activated, and to change the rules while you have the process underway, probably does raise some questions."

I asked if a legal challenge was possible. "Yes, because again, we're changing the succession law in Massachusetts while the process that -- there is a process underway," said Tisei.
