Phivolcs: More magma rising to Mayon crater

LEGAZPI CITY—Volcanologists reported a sharp increase in the amount of sulfur dioxide that Mayon Volcano is emitting, indicating more magma rising to its crater.

Eduardo Laguerta, resident volcanologist, said instruments showed that Mayon emitted up to 627 tons of sulfur dioxide, a byproduct of burning sulfur, on Tuesday and 770 tons on Wednesday.

The amount of sulfur dioxide that the volcano emits when it is not restive is an average 500 tons a day.

Volcanologists made the new readings through an instrument called the fly spectrometer (flspec) which was first used on Tuesday.

Renato Solidum, chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), inspected the volcano surroundings on the same day.

“There is no chance that Mayon’s alert status would go back to level one,” said Solidum.

Phivolcs has raised alert level 2 for Mayon, which means people should watch out for ash explosions and magma flow.

He said Mayon was displaying “intensifying restiveness.”

I don't think any human intervention could ever make a volcano to erupt. Not even a nuke (but it could probably speed up the process if the volcano was about to erupt anyway).
