I am legend and world depopulation

I found an article recently about 'i am legend' and it seems there is more than meets the eye!
Could 'they' be giving a clue on what may happen?
The film starts off with a miraculous cure for cancer (or swine flu in this case?) and eventually kills about 90% of the worlds population in less than 5 years.

It is based on Richard Matheson's novel of the same name. I saw the original movie entitled "The Last Man on Earth" (which was remade into "The Omega Man") starring Vincent Price.

Basically people are turned into vampire like mutants in the book by an unknown disease or mutation. The newer version is updated to make it fit in with the times.

The book was written at a time when germ warfare was a real possibility. There was no agreements on its use, so there was plenty of real life fear to go around.
