North Carolina offers girls a dollar a day not to get pregnant

in.news.yahoo.com

A program, at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, called College Bound Sisters is offering girls from 12- to 18-years a dollar a day to keep away from getting pregnant.

Girls following the program attend 90-minute meetings every week at which they receive lessons in abstinence and the use of contraceptives, and they get 7 dollars every week if they do not get pregnant.

That's terribly frightening. This definitely makes me uneasy. What if they are a victim of rape or incest? The 80s and 90s in US it was supposed to be 'cool' to be pregnant, for most of the girls.

Between the ages of 12 and 18 I believe most girls would not want to get pregnant. Perhaps I'm being presumptuous, but I would think that the majority of under-18 pregnancies are either accidental or the product of rape.

If this makes a few girls more vigilant about using birth control then I think the point of the program is to encourage girls to not deliberately get pregnant.

I believe the program has good intentions ,but they will be offset by the people who exploit young girls. There is a market for the unwanted babies underage girls produce. The babies bring in money dead or alive. For what the abortionists make off the sale of baby parts they should actually be paying the women who use them. The adoption racket is horrible also. There is something eirie about sterile couples waiting for young girls to become pregnant inorder for them to have a family. It is more terrible when those couples want perfect rh negative blond girls to become pregnant.

Then they better pay boys 7 dollars a week to not GET a girl pregnant. Not sure why it can't go both ways.

Well i think the whole point of the program is to lessen those accidental pregnancies as much as possible.

and to Anomaly,

i totally agree. if i lived there i would make claims of sexism and demand my 7 dollars.

I see the old socialism is creeping in over there also..

This is a bit extreme IMO.. Wouldn't it be more effective to give out free contraception? It sounds almost like there is a religious element behind it..

This is very odd! The vast majority of girls DO NOT get pregnant already! How do they know they are paying the right girls? How do they know these girls are not hiding pregnancies and getting abortions? Why are they not including boys?

Why would anyone bring up rape? I am pretty sure if a girl is raped and becomes pregnant as a result, then $7 a week is the least of her worries!

Who in the world would think $7 a week would deter sex! That is pretty cheap! A lot of people would gladly pay 100x that amount just for the opportunity to get them pregnant (i.e. SEX)!

This seems just plain silly! Illogical! Uneffective, misdirected, sexist, racist, presumptuous, cheap, ..........vocab running thin!
