Its an emerging epidemic larger than AIDS, West Nile Virus, and Avian Flu combined.
Lyme disease is an epidemic kept hidden by the health authorities!

I have found a movie clip from the documentary Under Our Skin.

One of the most controversial illnesses in the history of medicine, Lyme disease may be the fastest growing infectious disease in the United States.

Yet each year thousands are misdiagnosed - many of them told that their symptoms are "all in their head." This upcoming documentary investigates the shocking human, medical, and political dimensions of Lyme disease, an emerging epidemic destroying countless numbers of lives.

A case study of the dangers of the confluence of money and medicine, the film brings into focus a haunting picture of our healthcare system and its inability to cope with a biological terror under our skin.

"While exposing a broken health care and medical research system, the film also gives voice to those who believe that instead of a crisis, Lyme is simply a "disease du jour," over diagnosed and contributing to another crisis: the looming resistance of microbes and ineffectiveness of antibiotics."

Jordan Fisher Smith shows us all the medicine he takes for his illness.

BACKGROUND

In the early 1970's, a mysterious ailment was discovered among children living around the town of Lyme, CT. What was first diagnosed as isolated cases of juvenile arthritis, eventually became known as Lyme disease, an illness triggered by spiral-shaped bacteria, similar to the microorganisms that cause syphilis.

Today, many of those untreated will suffer chronic debilitating illness. Some unknowingly will pass the disease on to their unborn children. Many will lose their livelihoods, and still others, their lives.

Health authorities and insurance industry claim the disease is easy to treat with anti-biotics, and that chronic Lyme realy is an unknown syndrom or a psychic condidtion. Many are told they IMAGINE IT!

Also other countries reports a rise in infections per year.

The bacteria that causes diseases are Borrelia burgdorferi, and are transmitted to humans through ticks that carries the bacteria.

Early symptoms are usually:
flu-like feelings of headache
stiff neck
fever
muscle aches
fatigue

About 60% of light-skinned patients notice a unique enlarging rash, referred to as erythema migrans (EM), days to weeks after the bite. On dark-skinned people, this rash resembles a bruise.

The rash may appear within a day of the bite or as late as a month later. This rash may start as a small, reddish bump about one-half inch in diameter. It may be slightly raised or flat. It soon expands outward, often leaving a clearing (normal flesh color) in the center. It can enlarge to the size of a thumb-print or cover a persons back.

Star and Flag this thread. This is very important.

One of my best friends is chronically ill with Lyme disease. Luckily this person has a great attitude and very supportive family. But this person has a lot of pain and suffering because of it.

Unfortunately the problem is far worse than you imagine. If a new disease could be combated by a crusade against only tyranny, well, success may be possible sooner. Sadly, the fight is against ignorance, stupidity and sloth as well. Medical incompetence will be with us for a while yet. In the UK when visiting a medic: always bear in mind you're getting a "best guess" from an over-worked individual with decade-old information. So, a new disease is always going to be problematic for us. More funding for the medics? Would seem sensible if we want to stop the coming plague. But maybe we don't want to eh ....?

living in the south especially. ticks are everywhere in the summer months. just a quick walk through some bushes, and you could come out with 2 or 3. if you have a dog, they can bring them in.

make sure to check yourself whenever you come in the house, and yes check in those sensitive warm spots of your body too. cant see an area, then get some help. 2 minutes of checking will save you a lifetime of hurt.

they are usually carried by deer ticks, and they are the smaller dark colored ones. easy to spot on white, but sometimes they are small. make sure that if the tick has had time to attach to you to GET THE HEAD OUT. sometimes they will be held on really tight and when you pull it, will leave the head inside. you can get infection that way as well.

just stay safe and alert
