I think I can answer for all us, the vinigary peppery smell was actually unpleasant. But hey, some people like to drink scotch.

The thing is, that sauce was a paste. It actually smelled fairly okay, I thought. And tasted that way, too. But the fact that it was a paste should have been a hint - no self-respecting tomato would remain non-coagulated around that.

Actually there's a benefit - I have recently had several spicy foods (a particular wasabi-ginger combination comes to mind), and the most I've been able to rate them (even Jalapeños!) is 'piquant'.
