What do PRE-NASA astronomers say about moon anomalies?

A lot of us seem to think that astonomical data and observations started with the creation of NASA in 1958. It seems strange that we should rely on an agency that's so fractured and discredited. Trusting NASA to have the final word on space data is like asking the Neo-Cons to write a travel-guide to the Middle-East, there's just too much personal agenda involved.

I'd like to start a thread that's a collection of the observations of pre-NASA astronomers on the moon. Here's one for starters, from Jim Marrs:

- During March and April of 1787, Britain’s Sir Frederick William Herschel, pioneer of the reflecting telescope and discoverer of Uranus, claimed to have sighted three “bright spots,” four “volcanoes,” and lights moving “above the moon.” - In July 1821, a German astronomer reported sighting “brilliant flashing light spots.” His was one of numerous reports of flashing or blinking lights seen on the moon. - In February 1877, a line or streak of light was seen stretching across the crater Eudoxus. This light was observed for about an hour, ruling out the possibility that it was merely a meteorite striking the lunar surface with a flash. - Two steaks of medium intensity light were recorded on June 14, 1940, in the crater Plato, a location where reports of lights have numbered in the thousands. - A “black cloud surrounded by violet color” was seen in the Sea of Tranquility by Canadian astronomers on September 11, 1967.

Ironically, NASA produced a very good compilation themselves, proof that no organisation is monolithic, and leaks will occur.

Transient Lunar Phenomena (TLP) has been recognized for years. It's no secret, and even those mustache-twirling folks at NASA admit it happens. There are several very good websites focusing on it:

These days, most astronomers figure that they either have to do with outgassing of frozen subsurface material exposed to the sun, or lunar meteorite impacts. Prior to NASA, they were suspected to be a lot of different things, including Moon Men.

That's why we have NASA and science and all that other evil stuff. To come up with more plausible avenues of exploration.

Science existed before NASA. You're trying to spin it so if anyone questions NASA they're a pseudo-scientist and conspiracy theorist. You're using the standard tactics which are: A) Patronising tone, and B) Extension of any dissenting argument to absurd levels. Please use facts not bluster.

NASA have discredited themselves plenty of times.
