Why do they punish independent voters by not letting them vote in primaries?

I'm considering changing my party affiliation as a Democrat to being an independent. I got fed the lie that Democrats aren't neoconservatives and that they don't help militarizes of other nations. Reading a few books and reading some books and some thoughts about liberalism or socialism or stuff the Democratic party typically believes in helped me change my mind toward the party itself.

I have nothing against the Democratic party ideologically. I don't believe that contemporary Democrats are socialists. I believe that they are doing what they think is right and unfortunately their ideology guides them to be interventionists. Most people who I have talked to in the Democratic party are somewhat socialist or for intervention on the economy in some way or another.

I want to know why states don't allow for independents to vote in primaries. I just see it as that states are punishing independents for being independent thinkers. I want to register as an independent but my state doesn't have open primaries so I'm somewhat mad. I don't see why you should forfeit you rright to vote in primaries by registering independent.

I dont see how independants are punished. Repubs cant vote for dems in the primaries. Same the other way around. Why should independents be allowed the special privelage?

We don't see ourselves as affiliated with either party but I don't see why a party wouldn't want our vote. When I register as independent I will be throwing away my party affiliation. But why wouldn't parties want our votes? Why wouldn't they let us vote in their primaries? It would certainly help their cause wouldn't it?

Umm. In my state they do have primaries just poor attendance.
Would've cared about the Libertarian party if RP wasn't still on the GOP ticket at the time.

I'm sure either party would want our vote, but I guarantee both parties would fight tooth and name to keep the other from getting it.
