Despite having more CCTV than any other country we still have crime Shoplifting, robbery, night time violence? Yup. Still happens. Is it less than
other countries? No it isn't. A couple of tired people working the night shift in front of 40 monitors or a rotating camera mast scheme will still
miss incidents.
The grainy footage gained from most CCTV cameras is unlikely to get passed the Criminal Prosecution Service.
In addition, what would be the point of all this spying?
In Orwell's 1984, the constant surveilance of citizens is beneficial to the aims of 'the party'. What uses would our current government have in
knowing all the little details of the lives of us citizens. It would just be a drain of resources, time, and money, and would not achieve anything.
In my previous employment in a retail environment, a member of staff was clearly seen stealing on the CCTV system, however we were told that we
weren't allowed to use it by the police as it was inconclusive!
CCTV isnt THAT bad at the moment. As most cameras are owned by different companies and so are not linked up. The day when all cameras are linked up in
a central "Hub" with technology such as face recognition etc etc, thats the day when we need to start worrying!
