Help with xbox please

My has just purchased an xbox and is having trouble getting sound from it. He plugs his earphones into and their is no sound. He has a 22 inch monitor without speakers as he wanted external speakers, what cable does he need to achieve this.

Plugs his earphones to what? The 360 doesn't have any earphone input. There is only the one on the 360 controller, and that's for specific games or Xbox Live communications.

The only way he could use earphones to hear the sound from 360 games is to plug the earphones into the TV (if the TV has it), or connect the sound cables to an external sound system and plug the earphones there.
