Move to Repeal Term Limit for US President

Just came upon this interesting info. It seems that there is a move underway in the House to repeal the 22nd Amendment, thereby allowing the President to serve more than two terms. The political implications of this are huge. Our incoming president is one of the most popular, if not the most popular in recent history. Could this bill be passed, thereby rendering President Obama, ruler of this nation for as long as he pleases?

Rep. Jose Serrano, D-N.Y., earlier this month introduced the bill, H. J. Res. 5, which, according to the bill's language, proposes "an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second article of amendment, thereby removing the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as President."

Hmm... surely you don't mean to imply anything by saying "for as long as he pleases"?

In any case, I would support this movement. Popular support and a willingness to stay in office are all that should count in a democracy, right?

I wouldn't get too worried. Many English Commonwealth countries (England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc etc) have open end governments meaning that a single political party is voted for usually for a 3-4 year stint. If they do a good job the people vote again and may keep them in. This can go on forever if the people continue to vote that party in.

Admittedly it is not perfect. For example, a party can be re-voted in based on the leader, but then the leader stands down and their deputy takes control. Not so good if your deputy was Dick Cheney lol.

But then again, I think we have learnt that voting in the US is not always fair, so it may leave the system open to abuse.

Well see that's the thing. Its not a party line vote we're talking about. Its the position of one of the, if not THE most powerful person in the world. Given public reaction to him, and his decidedly apparent Messiah complex, this should be an issue of grave concern.
