Victoria Cross winner Mark Donaldson wants to return to Afghanistan

SAS soldier Mark Donaldson has won the Victoria Cross for risking his life in Afghanistan - and now he can't wait to rejoin his mates in the thick of the battle against the Taliban.

Trooper Donaldson was serving with the SAS in Oruzgan in Afghanistan on September 2 last year when his unit was hit by an ambush, wounding nine Australians.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross for “most conspicuous acts of gallantry in a circumstance of great peril”, according to the citation.

Well Trooper Donaldson joins fine company in the form of Willie Apiata of the NZSAS is also a Victoria Cross recipient. The finest Anzac traditions and legacy are being up held by both men . Interestedly the act that won Donaldson the Victoria Cross bears some resemblance to the action that won Apiata his Victoria Cross because both men rescued injured comrades while under fire .

It should be noted that Donaldson is the first recipient of the Victoria Cross for Australia just like Apiata is the first recipient of the Victoria Cross for New Zealand . My respects and congratulations go to Trooper Donaldson .
