I was listening to the radio today and they were talking about the rover that just finished it's mission and how they are going to keep going.

Question: The guy on the radio said that Mars was hundreds of millions of miles away? I thought the sun was 93 million miles away or something like that? So, is the sun closer to us than Mars....I always thought not? Can someone clear this up for me?

Its because the orbit of Earth around the sun takes half the time as Mars' does. We are moving around to the other side of the sun, increasing the distance between the planets.
